Create a Custom Debian Live Environment (CD or USB) Feb 8, 2018 Updated May 26, 2018 These are steps that I used on an Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) 64-bit system to build an x86 Debian 9 (Stretch) live environment that I can boot from CD or USB. Live install images. A live install image contains a Debian system that can boot without modifying any files on the hard drive and also allows installation of Debian from the contents of the image.

The standard Ubuntu Cd can be used as a LiveCd as well as an installer. Live mode is the default option when booting from CD. Only some of the non-standard downloads (such as the 'Alternate Cd') lack this functionality.
Ubuntu recommends at least 2GB of RAM for the LiveCd, so maybe your client isn't up to par? Have you tried a lighter distro like Lubuntu or Xubuntu?
Another great option would be to customize the standard Ubuntu ISO, removing some of the larger software packages like OpenOffice, GIMP, and Firefox. These are considerably larger than the install software.
